So what exactly is Occupational Therapy?

(Hint - it's nothing to do with career guidance, returning to work, or job training.)

Occupational Therapy is rooted in the idea that when we are supported in doing the things that we want to do, are expected to do, or have to do (our so-called "occupations") we feel better.  OTs understands that the roles and jobs we perform, the relationships we enjoy (or struggle with,) the tasks we perform in our daily lives and the environments we navigate all have meaning and are all important to who we are in life - as well as in death. Occupational therapists understand that sometimes we need therapy to help us keep doing the things that matter to us for as long as we can - but also know that doing the things that matter to us is inherently therapeutic.

Occupational Therapists take a very broad and individual view of "occupation" which includes all the things that a person wants to do, is expected to do, and has to do in his day.

Why do I need an OT?

Occupational Therapists are master problem-solvers. We're trained clinically to listen, to really understand how the symptoms of illness impact function, talk about the very real emotions that people experience as things get more challenging, and figure out ways to help you or your loved one do the things that matter most - as easily, and for as long, as is possible. OTs are holistically trained, which means we constantly consider how one aspect of a person's environment, relationships or illness impacts other parts and how these interactions affect a person's ability to do the things that are meanigful and necessary to them. Actually....

OT is listed as a hospice benefit under Medicare Part B. However, shortage of providers means that most people never run into an OT on their end of life journey.....

Does this mean my work?

Taking that long postponed trip to Florida?

Everything? Even bathing, eating, and toileting?

The Fun Stuff

Life is more than doing what we need to do. It's finding time to connect with ourselves, our world and our favorite people by doing the things that make us feel most alive. Sometimes we have to change the way we do things - or the way we do other things to make sure we have energy for these precious activities.  OT can help. What matters most to you?

The necessary stuff

So-called "simple" tasks such as toileting, bathing and dressing actually require a lot of strength, coordination and energy. We realize this when we - or loved ones - get sick. OTs are experts in finding ways to let folk do these things as easily and for as long as they can, which helps reduce pain and stress, increase self-esteem, and free up precious energy for other important activities.

This journey will ask you to have hatd conversations. It may require you to put to rest old hurts, to forgive yourself or others, and to make difficult decisions about the future.  There are no short cuts, but OT can help manage anxiety, help prepare for tough conversations, and find ways to share stories, wisdom and feelings.
